Watch Al Jazeera on WilliNet!

For immediate release…

Local cable TV viewers can now watch Al Jazeera news programming on WilliNet, Community Access TV for Williamstown. The half-hour global news report Al Jazeera English News Bulletin began its Monday-Friday, 9 pm schedule on channel 17 on April 5.

The program is produced out of the Washington, D.C. bureau of Al Jazeera English, the 24-hour English-language news and current affairs channel, headquartered in Doha, Qatar. The network offers the world’s first global English language news channel to be headquartered in the Middle East. According to their website, Al Jazeera English will become “the English-language channel of reference for Middle Eastern events, balancing the current typical information flow by reporting from the developing world back to the West and from the southern to the northern hemisphere.” The news outlet aims to give voice to untold stories, promote debate, and challenge established perceptions.

Al Jazeera English News Bulletin is sponsored on WilliNet by Williamstown resident Scott Walker, “I am pleased to sponsor Al Jazeera. We’re a connected world and desperately in need of mutual understanding, and Al Jazeera’s reasoned, objective, and from-another-place perspective is vitally important to every citizen.”

Aljazeera means “the island” or “the peninsula” in Arabic. The name refers to the Arabian Peninsula, the news network’s geographic origin. Visit willinet.org for the program schedule of Al Jazeera English News Bulletin.

Category Cloud Navigation!

See the “cloud” of words and labels on the uper right side of this page? This is a navigation system that is easy and fun to use. Just place your mouse over the area and watch as the cloud of labels move from the back to the front, getting larger and darker as they move to the front. With a little practice, you’ll be able to navigate the cloud of labels easily. When the category that you want to visit is near the front, just click on a label and the site will take you there! Give it a try!!!

MLP to close Aug. 20th

Margaret Lindley Park will close at the end of the day Thursday, August 20, so that the wall separating the pond from Hemlock Brook can be replaced. The wall has been seriously undermined by storms, and if it fails the pond will disappear into the brook. The timing is dictated by the level of the brook, environmental regulations, and the upcoming end of the federal fiscal year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is funding 75% of the cost, which must be billed by September 30 else the money is lost. Total project cost is estimated at $188,498.

The Milne Public Library and WilliNet offer video editing class.

Edward Cating, WilliNet Production Manager, will be teaching a class in iMovie editing at WilliNet on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 28 and 29 from 1 pm to 4 pm. This class is currently full!

Alliance for Community Media Northeast Region – Call for Video Entries!

Time for the ACM-NE Region 12th Annual Video Contest

Without a doubt, the summer has had a very soggy start here in the Northeast. One positive aspect of the endless dreary wet days is that we’re really getting a lot of stuff done. One of my big projects in the next couple of weeks is kicking off the 12th (can you believe it?) Annual Video Contest. Every year we get more entries, which is a wonderful thing. So this year, we’re trying something new to make ourselves more efficient and save time. Our Entry Form is going on-line!

Yes, that’s right – on-line entry. You’ll be able to fill in your entry on-line, pay with a credit card if you wish (or a check if you want), get a number to mark your DVD, and then ship it down to us. It’ll save us from inputting all that data, and you’ll be sure to get your name right on the winner’s plaque. A good deal all around.

http://ne.alliancecm.org

Keri Stocksted is working on the logistics for this and we should be sending out the call for entries soon. Keep an eye out for it on our website and in your email box. We’ll send it out electronically to the list serves, the entrants from last year, and the ACM list. Plus, if you’re on our Constant Contact email list, you’ll get it that way, too.

The awards ceremony will be held in West Hartford, CT on November 7th. More details about the event will follow, but we’re planning workshops during the day and a great evening event that will highlight the wonderful work that our access producers do.

Now, with all of this advanced notice, you’ll have lots of time to copy your best shows, fill in your entry forms, and then relax at the beach. If the sun ever comes out!
