Williams Research Talk: “Dancing with the Hips, Butt, & Pelvis: Black Majorette/Dance Team Performance & the Politics of Pleasure”

Public invited to ’62 Center Main Stage on Wed, April 19, 7-8:00pm for this Research Talk by Saroya Corbett. In this discussion, Saroya Corbett, Bolin Fellow in Dance, addresses the racialized and gender politics of dancing with the hips, butt, and pelvis. She examines Black culture’s engagement and complex relationship with the politics of respectability and pleasure. To contextualize these movement cultures, she explores the use of the mid-section in Black majorette/dance team performance, a movement practice that originates from the marching band culture at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Masks are required for all members of the audience.
